Methyl bromide is an odorless, colorless gas used to control a wide variety of pests in agriculture and shipping, including fungi, weeds, insects, nematodes (or roundworms), and rodents.

Agricultural growers inject methyl bromide about two feet into the ground to sterilize the soil before crops are planted. Although the soil is covered with plastic tarps immediately after a treatment, 50 to 95 percent of the methyl bromide eventually enters the atmosphere. Now It had been banned to use on the  Agricultural  in the world .

Methyl bromide is also used to treat commodities such as grapes, asparagus, logs, and other imported goods to prevent introducing pests to the United States. Treatments often fulfill official quarantine requirements for international shipments.

3.1  Methyl bromide for QPS

Most methyl bromide, by volume, that is used under the QPS exemption, involves quarantine treatments targeting quarantine pests. Methyl bromide has been traditionally used as a treatment to control pests and pathogens of quarantine importance on various traded goods. These treatments are known as ‘Quarantine and Pre-shipment’ (QPS) uses and can be performed by the exporting country at time of shipment or upon arrival by the importing country. As a QPS treatment, MB facilitates trade and also prevents accidental import of exotic pests.

                                     

                          

3.2  As methylating agent

Methyl bromide is also used as a chemical intermediate as a methylating agent, as a refrigerant, as a herbicide, as a fire extinguishing agent, and as a solvent in aniline dye manufacture.
